Engineering World Health (EWH) is an organization that has given me the opportunity to travel to Rwanda and Guatemala, learn in the most literal sense of "hands-on" and challenge myself time after time. I first got started with EWH in 2013 when I was accepted as a Summer Institute participant in Rwanda. After that amazing experience, some even more amazing professors at my school, Rochester Institute of Technology, helped me to start up and become the president of an Engineering World Health Chapter on campus. Now I am traveling with EWH again as an on-the-ground-assistant (OTGA) to Guatemala for 3 weeks this winter.
EWH began by donating new and used medical equipment to developing countries, but when they went to check on the equipment, they found that the donations were hurting the hospitals more than helping. Now EWH sends students to these countries to help repair the equipment as well as teach technicians. EWH also has BMET programs in many countries that trains natives to become technicians in the local hospitals. But that is not all! So check out their website and their TEDTalk below and learn all about the amazing things EWH does.
